Biographical / Historical
William “Bill Loving, Jr. was born on January 2, 1934, to William Loving and Lillian McChesney Loving of Bowling Green, Kentucky. After graduating from Bowling Green High School, he attended Baylor University, Southern Seminary, and Kentucky Southern College. In 1968, he became a college admission administrator and student financial service professional at FTU (University of Central Florida) and then in the early 1970s served as the Financial Aid Director at Rollins College, a position he held until the late 1980s. In that capacity, Loving worked closely with students, serving as the faculty advisor of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity on campus.
Loving’s passion was photography and in 1978, he attended an Ansel Adams workshop on Yosemite National Park. At Rollins, he team-taught a photography course with Dr. Eric Blossey of Chemistry. After the conclusion of his Rollins career, Loving became a professional photographer in Central Florida. In addition to writing catalog introductions and essays for a number of area exhibits, he lectured on several photographers and on photographic collecting. His works were not only showcased at multiple local art festivals, Maitland Arts Center, and Orlando City Hall, but also exhibited at the Galleries International and the Cornell Fine Arts Museum.
Loving passed away on September 13, 2009. Facilitated by Michael Stewart '1982, the Bill Loving Jr. Collection of Rollins Photography was donated to the Rollins College Archives in 2025; and with funding support provided by Nancy Loving, his negatives have been digitized by the Full Circle Fine Art Services of Baltimore, Maryland. The related online collection is a representative sample of Loving’s photographic works, which vividly document a vibrant academic life at Rollins during the 1970s and 1980s, including academic programs, campus scenes, individual portraits, student groups, social gatherings, special events, etc.
