Scope and Contents

As a citizen action group, the founders of the Friends of the Wekiva River began meeting informally in 1978. In 1982, FOWR was chartered with nineteen members. The mission of FOWR are: to promote and protect the aesthetic and recreational values of the Wekiva River system; to protect the integrity of the Wekiva River Basin; to work toward restoration and continuation of the river and its tributaries; and to carry out educational activities to the same end. In 2003, FOWR donated its archival files to Rollins College, which include: business records, correspondence, publications, newspaper clippings, project reports, studies on growth management, water management and wildlife, local rules, regulations and ordinances, as well as photographs, artifacts, and audio-visual materials.

Abstract

The Friends of the Wekiva River (FOWR) is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserve the beauty and natural functions of the Wekiva River system. Received by Rollins College in 2003, Friends of Wekiva Rivers Papers document the environmental protection activities of the community-based group in Central Florida since its founding in 1982.
